Alloy steels have alloying elements like silicon, titanium, nickel, manganese, chromium, aluminum, copper, etc. in varying proportions to manipulate the properties of steel, for instance corrosion resistance, strength, ductility, hardness, form-ability, etc. Manufacturers make different applications using alloy steels, some applications are pipelines, transformers, auto parts, piston pins, electric motors, and power generators.

Stainless steel has 10-20% chromium and is highly corrosion resistant. If the stainless steel contains minimum 11% of chromium, steel is round 200 times more resistant to corrosion as compared to mild steel. Stainless steel is subdivided into 3 groups:

↣ Austenitic – this type of steel is non-magnetic and non heat-treatable. It has about 18% of chromium, 8% nickel, and less than 0.8% carbon.
↣ Ferritic – This type of steel has trace amount of nickel, 12-17% of chromium, and less than 1% of carbon. Manufacturers strengthen these steels by cold working.
↣ Martensitic – such steel has 11-17% chromium, less than 0.4% nickel and up to 1.2% carbon.
