Self-motivation is not easy to come by because technological devices have made us lazy and dull. The tasks in the not so distant past required man to actually work and put in effort. This made them fit and to maintain that level of fitness, people had to eat healthy and exercise on a daily basis. That was their motivation.
Motivation can be divided into two parts; intrinsic level of motivation and extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation factors are internal where extrinsic factors are driven by fear and reward such as penalty and money respectively. Since we are talking about achieving motivation, we are going to factor in both elements.
1. Subcontract your inspiration
There are people in the world who find inspiration from the people who believe in them. These people could be your parents, spouse, and teachers and so on. When they realize that someone is standing by them they tend to take risks and come out at the other end as successful entrepreneurs. It is not to say they didn’t fail but the act of outsourcing their inspiration did the trick for them. Even, if they failed they knew people would still believe them, in their skills and their dream. So they don’t shy away from taking leap of faiths. That is one way to keep yourself motivated.
2. Expand your library
Motivation can be sought in books. Books are a source of knowledge and gives you a perspective. If there is some task that you have been meaning to accomplish, by reading you can learn a fresher approach in doing that task and that too in less time and so on. The Amazon library is a classic example of this. When you purchase books on Amazon, it keeps track of your preferences and present you with the books on your favorite subjects when you return to shopping. It can be labeled as a trick to propel you into buying books but when you look at the other way Amazon is doing you a favor by providing with a dozen of new books to read.Meaning more chances of staying motivated.
3. Set up hierarchical goals
There should be main goal life but there also should be some short term goals that will lead towards the culmination of that ultimate goal. Imagine you went on developing an app and invested everything in it so that app could see the light of the day and yet you failed. Your BIG dream has left you empty and at the same time disappointed in life.
What to do then? On the path to developing that app if you have left breadcrumbs, you can always get back home. By breadcrumbs I mean something to fall back on such saved some money for the rainy or in the process have you mastered the art of development? And things like that.
You have money saved somewhere, you can get by your days before a job or an opportunity comes arises or if you have learned web development well, you could quickly jump into the market as a web developer and earn by making minor tweaks to the existing websites for clients or by building sites from scratch for beginners. This is all, until something better comes along.
The idea here is to have a cushion to fall back, in the case when things go horribly wrong for you. That is one way of keeping oneself motivated – strategizing for the long term by planning for the short term.
4. Make your goals public
If your social circle is aware of the goals that you have spoken about in the past and have made a mention of it somewhere, you are more likely to carry on pursuing them. There is a study called Hawthorne Effect which observed employees working at a workplace and found them to be doing well as opposed to those who weren’t being watched.
Point being when your goals are out in the open, you know people are going to expect of you to achieve those goals (which is a rarity) and most of them will hope for you to fail and fail miserably at them. So in order to prove them wrong you cannot have a better option of staying motivated.
You will do everything in your power and make it a purpose in life to accomplish those goals when the whole world is aware of them. But nothing is certain in life, failure and tragedies are part and parcel of it. So let them know of your goals but don’t be boastful about. There is a fine line.
